Lessons well learnt DMS holder Shirin Ong finds literature and politics an ideal combination to learn more about life By Geraldine Tan
DEFENCE Merit Scholarship (DMS) holder Shirin Ong is convinced that her degree in English literature and politics will hold her in good stead when she graduates from the University of York in 2010.
She elaborates: "The value of the humanities lies in its applicability to all areas. English literature enriches my under-standing of life, language, communication and compassion, while politics keeps me grounded in international realities, qualities important especially in an area like defence." At the end of the day, a degree is simply a stepping stone to the learning that will take place on the job," she adds. Ms Ong says she was drawn to the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) scholarship because it "combined the allure of working in a dynamic and integral sector of public service, with the added bonus of flexibility in choice of university major". Fortunately, her parents were supportive of her decision. Recalling the application process, her mother Chia Gek Hoon says: "We attended a presentation by Mindef and were impressed with the scholarship scheme. I have no concerns regarding her career choice. I believe it has good prospects and it is good for her to follow her dreams." Asked what she enjoys most about her course, Ms Ong singles out a module on the Democratic Tradition as her favourite so far. "We explored issues from the different political systems to types of political participation. The course is both theoretical and current, and the subject permeates our daily lives a lot more than we imagine," she notes. Four months on, Mdm Chia has noticed subtle changes in her daughter: "She takes responsibility for things such as stocking up on groceries and doing laundry. I think she has learnt to appreciate home more. "Enjoying the independence and exposure, Ms Ong says: "The overseas experience has developed my independence, adaptability and awareness of my character, country and culture. This will have a profound impact on the opinions I hold and the decisions I make, both in my daily life and in the workplace." |
