It has been said that Japanese cuisine is like a form of art. Judging by the unique and artistically presented gastronomic delights at
Waruku, I do agree!
Check out dishes like the Horenso & Bacon Cream ($12.80) and
Ika no Sugata to Mentaiko Cream ($16.80) to see what I mean.
The former, served in a container with a wooden cover, consists of udon noodles in a creamy spinach sauce, and generous toppings of thick bacon slices, parmesan cheese and black pepper.
The latter is a special dish of cold noodles and a whole squid sliced up, well seasoned and grilled. The zesty flavours of the tender squid and the delicate taste of mentaiko (cod fish roe) combine wonderfully with the creamy sauce specially created by the chef.
Besides its artistry, another interesting aspect of Japanese cuisine is the unusual assortment of preparation methods used. For instance, the preparation of the Chicken Houba Yaki ($9.80) involves the use of the houba leaf, also known as "the leaf that never burns".
First, a large houba leaf (specially imported from Japan) is laid upon a tiny cooking stove. Thick miso paste, blended with minced garlic and mushrooms, is spread onto the surface of the leaf before chunky pieces of half-grilled chicken are placed on it to be cooked. This process turns out tender, flavourful chunks of chicken imbued with the fragrance of the leaf.
Other popular dishes at this restaurant include Ura Maki ($8.80), pieces of sushi neatly arranged on a long piece of porcelain ware; Sashimi Platter, generous portions of assorted sashimi served on a layer of ice ($22); and Beef Kaminabe ($9.80), a combination of beef slices, vegetables and clear broth served in a fire-proof paper bowl.
