Thirty years ago, a lad who stayed over at his uncle's fragrance shop awoke to myriad beguiling scents. Today, he still bids goodnight and good morning to alluring whiffs, but of a different kind. Instead of scintillating perfumes, he now finds himself eating, sleeping and breathing pratas and curries that ooze captivating, tangy aromas.
Meet Mr Mohamed Jafrullah, the boss of Lucky Prata. The 41-year-old decided to branch out from his fragrance business two months ago and make his foray into the food and beverage industry, seeking to impress foodies with "good and value-for-money" Indian-Muslim grub.
And impress he did. Serving an exciting array of cuisine like curry fish head and tandoori chicken, whose enticing aromas had me sold even before I was anywhere close to tasting them, this is one eatery that would tick a spice-lover's boxes.
I ordered the Masala Thosai ($2), prepared to light, sweet and semi-fluffy perfection. Filled with tasty potato stuffing, it's best eaten with sambar curry and chuttny.
They also serve a special roti prata, the Italian Prata ($7), with mutton bits, mushrooms, capsicum, onion and cheese spread generously over its surface, this fusion dish could easily pass off as a pizza. Taste it for a unique East-meets-West quality that will pique your senses.
Adventurous diners can try their French-style (banana filling with chocolate topping) and Chinese-style (red beans and sesame seeds) pratas too.
If you're still not feeling full, grab some Nasi Briyani ($5). Choose from chicken, mutton or fish varieties and enjoy lip-smacking side dishes such as yoghurt-covered greens and crispy papaddums.
Round up your meal with a cup of Teh Tarik ($1), whose tantalising aftertaste will linger right down to the last drop.
