A rainbow-hued repertoire of dishes, a riverside location and Japanese trendiness combine to make Pasta de Waraku a most appetising spot for a casual meal.

Possibly your biggest problem here will be deciding what to eat. With more than fifty Japanese-style pasta items beautifully displayed in the menu, and numerous other offerings too (curry rice, pizzas, desserts, gratins), making up your mind could be tough.

The restaurant has its pasta specially made and imports all ingredients from Japan, while the Japanese chefs whip up the creative selections with an eye on dining trends from their home country.

One dish that's more popular with Japanese customers than local patrons is Cod Roe Pasta ($12.80). Singaporeans love strong-tasting stuff, whereas the pretty pink roe against cream-hued spaghetti is light and delicate, with a subtle charm - though a dash of wafu (bonito) sauce can be added for more flavour.

I was most impressed by the Carbonara Waraku Style ($12.80). This totally scrumptious meeting of bacon, egg yolk and wafu creamy sauce combines the bacon's smoky appeal with the tempting texture of runny yolk and the smoothness of cream-coated pasta with that comforting hint of wafu sauce.

Littleneck Clam Soup Pasta ($14.80) is worth having too. Mild spaghetti strands and tasty clams are a nice foil for the flavour-filled soup, which is very much like vongole sauce, only lighter. You'll want to drink every drop.

Whatever pasta items you order, make room for the wonderful Scallop & Prawn Pizza ($12.80). The amazingly thin crust - the thinnest I've seen - slices into alternating prawn and scallop wedges for precious mouthfuls of seafood, chewy mozzarella and tartar sauce.

Check out the drool-worthy ice-cream sundaes too. I was too full to have dessert after my meal, but I hope the rest of you have bigger appetites.
